page 11The Municipality of Flora joined the nation in celebrating the 42nd Nutrition Month with a simple but meaningful lecturing activities about child rearing and other important topics for local mothers on July 26 at the Dr. Efren U. De San Jose Memorial Sports Center.

      An estimated 200 participants that included pregnant and lactating mothers and their babies from the different baranggays, resource speakers and staff members of the organizing local Rural Health Unit (RHU) led by Dr. Karizza Joie. L. Hurtado gathered for the one-day affair.

This year’s theme of the nationwide celebration is centered on the importance of making sure that new born babies are well-taken-cared of during their developmental years: “First 1,000 years ni Baby pahalagahan para sa malusog na kinabukasan.”

Sangguniang Bayan Member Aniceta Cacacho advised the mothers to maintain on breastfeeding instead of the supplemental ways especially for those newly-born up to six months.

Cacacho spoke on behalf of Mayor Rodolfo Juan, who begged-off due to a more important commitment in Baguio City.

She said that even if they are already two years old, proper care and the right nutrition for the child would still be needed to insure their health and prevent them from any sicknesses.

In his opening remarks, SB Member and chairman of committee on health Demetrio Conde Jr. told the participants to listen well to the resource speakers and learn from them.

This lecture he said is very critical for ensuring children’s health.

The first topic for the morning session was backyard gardening as a source of nutritious food for the family especially the mother and her baby lectured by Mrs. Evangeline Aguda from the Municipal Agriculture Office.

Budgeting and other critical financial needs were discussed by Mrs. Eufrecia Pascua of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

Food preparation and cooking methods as well as the importance of knowing the best weight of mothers during pregnancy and other related topics were given by Nutritionist Liza Cortez from the Flora National High School.

RHU staff members took turns in giving lectures on different child rearing topics during the afternoon session.

These included breastfeeding by Criely Bacyadan, Immunization by Aljon Encarnacion, weaning process by Cristina B. Ajayi, Dental Care by Rizalyn De San Jose, environmental Sanitation by Rhoda Nicolas and childhood illnesses by Jijay Mamba. (Story & Photos by N.A. Rodriguez Jr.)
